Gambling tax in Florida

Florida levies no personal income tax, so the state column on a Florida sportsbook, casino or pari-mutuel win is zero and the entire bill is federal. That narrows the problem: with no state deduction to claim, your losing tickets are worth exactly what the federal return says they are worth, and nothing beyond it.

One place for losses to matter instead of two

A bettor in Pennsylvania or California has two returns where losses can reduce the bill. A Florida bettor has one. Losses only ever reach the federal return, they only count there if you itemize, and from 2026 they only count up to the 90% cap. The practical consequence is that a Florida bettor taking the standard deduction gets no relief anywhere, at any level, and is taxed by the IRS on the gross winning column with nothing to offset it. Choosing to itemize is the whole decision, which is not true in a state that offers its own offset.

Florida gambling tax FAQ

Does Florida tax sports betting winnings?

No. Florida has no personal income tax, so the state figure in this calculator stays at zero regardless of how large the win is.

I live in Florida but placed the bet in another state. Does that change the answer?

Your state of residence drives the state line here and Florida taxes none of it. Some states do tax non-residents on winnings earned inside their borders, so a large win placed elsewhere is worth checking against that state rules separately.

Betting outside Florida?

The main gambling tax calculator covers all 51 US jurisdictions, with the same federal brackets, the 90% loss deduction cap and the standard versus itemized comparison.
